Joey's Rd1 Tips: Surprise upsets and sure things

We all know how difficult tipping in Round One can be.

Luckily for you, the greatest man to ever pull on the red and blue jersey has you covered.

In his brand new series previewing and reviewing every single nib Newcastle Knights game in 2020, Andrew 'Joey' Johns will also be providing his tips for all eight games, every round.

This week, Johns has used his expertise to select a few teams he sees as sure things, and a couple of massive upsets.

Joey Rd1 preview: Spine key, Ponga in focus, recipe to beat Warriors

Parramatta Eels v Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

Joey's Tip: Eels

For the opening game of the season, Johns had little doubt the Blue and Gold side will start their season on a positive note over their arch-rivals.

Canberra Raiders v Gold Coast Titans

Joey's Tip: Raiders

Another match Johns was in little doubt over, with last year's runners up hosting the reigning wooden spooners in the Nation's Capital.

North Queensland Cowboys v Brisbane Broncos

Joey's Tip: Cowboys

A massive game north of the border, Johns predicted the Cowboys would open their season with a win at their brand new stadium. He even described them as "The bet of the weekend."

Joey reveals the recipe for success against the Warriors

Newcastle Knights v New Zealand Warriors

Joey's Tip: Knights

The Eighth Immortal stuck solid with his old Club, believing they will overcome a new-look Warriors outfit. Johns went on to outline Mitchell Pearce's kicking game as a key ingredient in a potential Knights win.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks

Joey's Tip: Rabbitohs

Johns leaned towards the Bunnies in what's sure to be a tight game at ANZ Stadium, with Latrell Mitchell making his debut in the red and green jumper.

Me or You: Who's funnier?

Penrith Panthers v Sydney Roosters

Joey's Tip: Panthers

A massive upset! Johns selected the men from out west to overcome the back-to-back premiers in what would be an early contender for upset of the season.

"I've thought a lot about this one," Johns said.

"It'll be a real tight one, but I'm going to go the Panthers at home."

Manly Sea Eagles v Melbourne Storm

Joey's Tip: Storm

Another match that shapes as a real coin flip, Johns went with the Storm to get home over the Sea Eagles at Lottoland, describing the forecast wet weather as the reason behind his decision.

"It's going to be wet in Sydney...A smash up derby," Johns said.

"I'm going to go the Storm, just."

Brailey: Club debut, combinations, minutes

St George Illawarra Dragons v Wests Tigers

Joey's Tip: Tigers

The final game of the round shapes as one of the hardest to pick, with both teams looking to make a statement after missing the finals last year. However, Johns was left with little doubt that a Tigers victory is on the cards.
