Knights survive thriller to down Bears in Qualifying Final

The Newcastle Knights have booked their spot in next week's Major Semi-final with a hard-fought 26-20 win over the North Sydney Bears at St George Venues Jubilee Stadium.

The first half was tight, with both sides cagey before ill-discipline became the story. Knights’ hooker Diesel Hagan’s sinbin gave the Bears the extra man advantage, as Abiarthur Toi Tuilaepa crossed for the opening try. The Knights hit back through a Kyle McCarthy try, before Wilson De Courcey crossed in the final minute of the half to send Newcastle into the break leading 14-4.

The Bears refused to fold as Matt Stimson barged over early in the second half off the back of slick work from dummy-half Josh Cook. But it was a Tyson Gamble solo effort that restored an eight-point Newcastle buffer, with the Bears again down to 12 men for a second time after Jake Toby and Toi Tuilaepa both had stints in the sin bin.

The Bears kept clawing back. Matthew French dotted down after a clever Tom Steadman grubber, and Matt Komolafe finished off a length-of-the-field raid straight from the kick-off to make it a four-point game with more than 20 minutes remaining.

A moment of individual brilliance from Toby Winter then proved crucial, the young centre busting through the middle to send McCarthy away for his hat-trick, before rain arrived to add a further layer of drama to an already unpredictable afternoon.

A Connor Votano penalty goal steadied Newcastle's nerve with three minutes to go, before a tense finish saw the Knights hold on for the 26-20 victory.

Talking Points

Both teams had a player sin-binned, with the Bears' discipline proving especially after they were reduced to 12-men twice.

The wind and rain turned this into a lottery at times, with kicks blowing off the tee and the posts swaying visibly throughout the contest.

Kyle McCarthy's hat-trick, after a lean run of form, was the difference for the Knights.

Toby Winter continues to look like a genuine long-term prospect for Newcastle, capping a strong game with the line-break assist for McCarthy's third try.

Key Moment

Toby Winter's surge through the middle of the park before putting Kyle McCarthy over for his hat-trick try, swung momentum firmly back towards the Knights just as the Bears threatened to seize control.

What's next?

The Knights advance to next week's Major Semi-final against Minor Premiers the Penrith Panthers, while the North Sydney Bears are handed another chance as they face the Newtown Jets in a sudden-death Minor Semi-final.
