The nib Newcastle Knights have taken another significant step in strengthening their player development system, bringing together the club's Under 16 and Under 18 Development Squads from across the region for the inaugural Tri Series.
Held after six weeks of regional development programs, the day united squads from Newcastle, the Greater Northern Region and the Mid North Coast, providing aspiring players with the opportunity to showcase their progress while reinforcing the club's unified coaching philosophy.
Over the past six weeks, Newcastle Knights Pathways staff have delivered Development Squad programs across all three regions.
The program focused on developing core football skills, fundamental movement and consistent coaching principles, ensuring every player and coach receives the same messages regardless of where they are located.
Newcastle Knights General Manager of Pathways Hanna Clare said the Tri Series highlighted the strength of the club's aligned model.
"Today was a proud day for our club. Seeing our U16s and U18s Development Squads from three regions and six groups training and playing the same way, side by side, shows the alignment in our unified development system," Clare said.
The day also provided Pathways staff with another valuable opportunity to identify emerging talent while continuing to build strong relationships with local clubs and coaches across the Knights' catchment.
Clare said creating consistency across the entire region was central to the club's long-term vision.
Former NRL players Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Adam Blair have led the delivery of the Knights Coaching Framework throughout the regional programs, working closely with junior coaches and players to embed consistent standards across every location.
"The Knights are building the most comprehensive development system in the NRL and days like today are evidence of that," Clare said.
"The work Shaun (Kenny-Dowall) and Adam (Blair) are doing with our junior coaches and players means we're building a pathway where a kid from Port Macquarie, Tamworth or Newcastle can see their way to wearing the red and blue."
Alongside player development, the program has also placed a strong emphasis on supporting community coaches, helping create consistent learning environments throughout the region.
"Community coaches are critical to the success of our pathways. By investing in their development, we're creating better experiences for thousands of young players across our region."
