This weekend’s NRL Magic Round will carry extra meaning for 12-year-old Immi Alo, who has been named the nib Newcastle Knights’ patient ambassador for the NRL’s Kick for a Cause initiative.
In a special tribute, captain Kalyn Ponga will have Immi’s name written on his kicking tee as part of the campaign, helping raise awareness and support for John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
Immi was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma in January, 2024, beginning a long journey that saw John Hunter Children’s Hospital become a second home for her family.
After more than two years of treatment, Immi took her final chemotherapy tablet in February before proudly ringing the bell in March to mark the end of treatment. She is now in remission and continues to attend monthly check-ups.
Throughout her journey, football remained a major source of strength and normality.
Despite still undergoing treatment at the time, Immi returned to the field last year and now plays for the Wests Rosellas Under 14s.
The Newcastle Knights NRLW squad also played an important role in supporting Immi during treatment, regularly welcoming her to games and training sessions.
Being selected as a patient ambassador for Magic Round is a full-circle moment for Immi, combining her love of football with the hospital that helped save her life.
