Academy Graduates Earn NRL & NRLW Opportunities

The Newcastle Knights Academy has reached a significant milestone, with four emerging talents progressing into the club’s NRL and NRLW squads.

Toby Winter, Emily McArthur, Sienna Thomas and Stella Lewis have each earned their opportunity at the next level, marking a proud moment not only for the players, but for the continued evolution of the program.

Designed to accelerate the development of the club’s most promising pathways players, the Knights Academy has quickly become a critical piece of the long-term football strategy - with a clear focus on identifying, nurturing and retaining elite local talent in the Hunter.

Operating as an intensive, invite-only program, the Academy offers tailored strength and conditioning, advanced skills coaching, tactical education and direct exposure to NRL and NRLW environments.

Participants also benefit from mentoring by senior players and staff, alongside priority access to wellbeing, education and support services.

nib Newcastle Knights Director of Football Chris James said the progression of all four players highlights the impact of the Academy and its role in strengthening the club’s future.

“This is exactly what the Knights Academy was built for,” James said.

“To see Toby, Emily, Sienna and Stella take this next step into our NRL and NRLW programs is a fantastic achievement and a real validation of the work that’s gone into building the Academy.”

James emphasised the importance of creating clear, local pathways for emerging players in the region.

“One of our key priorities as a Club is keeping the best young talent here in the Hunter,” he said.

“We want players to know they don’t have to leave home to chase their dreams - we can provide an elite development environment right here in Newcastle.

“The Academy plays a huge role in that. It gives our most promising players the tools, support and exposure they need to bridge the gap to the top level.”

For the four graduates, the opportunity represents the beginning of the next chapter in their rugby league journey.
