Pathways Report: Second half comebacks highlight Junior Rep wins

The nib Newcastle Knights Junior Representative sides continued their season over the weekend.

In the junior men's competitions, the SG Ball Cup and Harold Matthews Cup squads hosted the St George Dragons and Central Coast Roosters respectively at the Newcastle Permanent Centre of Excellence.

The two junior women's sides were rested with the bye this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights sides in the Laurie Daley Cup and Andrew Johns Cup competitions headed out to Junee to take on the Riverina Bulls.

SG Ball Cup | Knights 16-14 Dragons

The SG Ball Cup side have won their third game from a possible four to start the season with a two-point victory over the St George Dragons at the Newcastle Permanent Centre of Excellence on Saturday.

The side trailed 14-0 at the break, leaking three tries in the first half, before turning the game on its head in the second.

Forward Bailey Carmichael scored immediately after half-time to kickstart a comeback.

Heading into the final 15 minutes, exciting centre Wilson De Courcey raced to the corner following a scrum win to put the Knights within four of the lead.

Chasing the final try, the Knights would grab it with six minutes remaining courtesy of a sensational team effort.

SG Ball: 2024 Round 4 Highlights

Following two in-field kicks and some ad-lib football, Wailer Whaiapu powered his way over the line to put the Knights level. Fullback Connor Votano converted the try to give Newcastle the lead.

The Under 19 Knights would hold onto their lead to claim their third win of the season. The team currently sits in fourth position on the ladder, two points off the top spot.

Harold Matthews Cup | Knights 16-12 CC Roosters

The Harold Matthews Cup side have returned to the winner's circle with a comeback victory of their own over the Central Coast Roosters at the Newcastle Permanent Centre of Excellence on Saturday.

Similar to the SG Ball side, the Under 17's were behind by 12 points at the break and staged a second half turnaround.

Halfback Lachlan Hails scored the first try for the Knights straight after the change of ends with quick footwork close to the line before his halves partner Ryder Crosswell crossed the line five minutes later.

Harold Matthews: 2024 Round 4 Highlights

Winger William Manning put the Knights ahead after gathering a kick to score in the corner.

The Knights defence would hold firm for the final stages to claim the two points.

The result lifts the side up into eighth spot on the ladder following the opening four rounds.

Laurie Daley Cup | NMR Knights 46-18 Riverina Bulls

The Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights Laurie Daley Cup side have won their first game of the season with a convincing result over the Riverina Bulls in Junee on Sunday.

The team scored an eight tries to three win over the Bulls with five-eighth Jack Thompson notching an impressive five-try haul.

Isaac Robb, Madden Potts and Wharepapa Kuru also crossed the line for the Newcastle-Maitland side.

Andrew Johns Cup | NMR Knights 44-12 Riverina Bulls

The Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights Andrew Johns Cup squad have won their fourth game in succession with a 32-point win over the Bulls on Sunday in June.

The side ran in an impressive one tries to two to continue their unbeaten run in the Under 16's competition.

With four rounds played, the squad will play the final round of the competition this Saturday against the Central Coast Roosters in Cessnock.
