Kalyn Ponga World Cup Update

nib Newcastle Knights Captain Kalyn Ponga has made himself unavailable for World Cup selection to focus on the Knights' preseason training.

Ponga informed Kangaroos Coach Mal Meninga today of his decision and explained the reasons behind the difficult decision to withdraw from the potential selection.

The Knights captain consulted numerous people over a long period of time, gathering all the relevant details to ensure a considered and informed decision was made, with the end result being to take a rest and prepare for a big 2023 season.

“I understand the potential opportunities that may be missed by this decision, however, due to the year we have endured, I really want to commit on the upcoming preseason,” Ponga said.

“My focus will sit firmly with nailing preseason from the start, and I believe this decision is in the best interest of myself and the Knights.”

The Newcastle Knights will wrap up the NRL season tonight with the Annual nib Newcastle Knights Awards Evening, including naming the 2022 Danny Buderus Medallist and several other prestigious awards.
