Get to know: Tamika Upton

With the highly-anticipated 2022 NRLW season kicking off in a months time, we caught up with our squad members to get to know them a little better.

We sat down with marquee signing and Queensland Origin representative, Tamika Upton ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Having grown up in Central Queensland, Upton kick-started her rugby league journey with the Blackwater Crushers. 

The fullback made her debut for the Brisbane Broncos in 2019 and has two NRLW Premierships and two State of Origins titles under her belt. Last year, she also made an impressive debut for the Indigenous All-Stars.

Upton will be sure to bring undeniable talent, passion and power this season.

Your journey in the game? Where have you played before?

I originally played for the Blackwater Crushers, in the under-6s and played until the cut-off age of 12; then reconvened again in 2019.

How did you find Rugby League?

I grew up in Central Queensland which is a very rugby league-dominated place. My whole family loved it, and I’ve always loved it.

Where is your hometown?

I have a few. Blackwater, Emerald and then Rockhampton.

What are you most looking forward to this season?

Playing with a new bunch of girls, it’s a whole different city and experience here. I can’t wait.

Favourite movie? 

Deja Vu

What are your goals for the 2022 season?

To build as a group here at the Knights and repay the club for what they're doing for us. Also, to go all the way and win a grand final.

Favourite canteen snack as a kid?

A pie and chocolate milk.

Best piece of advice you've received?

Don't think, just do. 

Greatest on-field moment?

Debuting for the State of Origin, with a bunch of friends. It was an exciting time.

Greatest off-field moment?

Being an aunty for the first time. 

Do you have any sporting heroes?

Cathy Freeman is unreal. Greg Ellis is also up there.

Favourite Shapes flavour?

I'm not a big Shapes eater but Pizza.

Worst gift you've ever received?

Any re-gift.
