Rookie Report: SG Ball side score gigantic win

In this week's Rookie Report, we take a look at the nib Newcastle Knights pathways teams in the Knock-On-Effect NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup, SG Ball Cup, Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup and Harold Matthews Cup competitions.

It was another massive weekend for our pathways teams across the grades.

The NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg Cup sides took on Newtown and Cronulla respectively over the weekend with the Flegg side playing the curtain-raiser for the NRL side.

The Junior Rep teams played in Round 8 of their competitions against the St George Illawarra Dragons at Lakeside Sporting Complex on Saturday.

NSW Cup - Knights 16-18 Jets

The NSW Cup side suffered an agonisingly close defeat at the hands of the Newtown Jets on Saturday.

The side went down by two points after a tight finish to the game.

Heath Gibbs got the Knights off to a great start scoring in the 2nd minute of the game.

The Jets responded with a try on the 10th minute mark through Mawene Hiroti.

The home side were reduced to 12 men with Franklin Pele sent to the bin 28 minutes into the game.

The Knights would score soon after with Edrick Lee posting his first try back after a 16-month recovery from a foot injury.

Again, the Jets would respond quickly, only three minutes later to take a narrow 12-10 lead.

Newcastle would also be reduced to 12 men when Dylan Phythian was sent to the sin-bin three minutes from the break.

The second half was another tight battle with the Jets drawing first blood with a try to Pele nine minutes into the second half.

With six minutes to go in the contest, Floyd Tighe got the Knights back into the game and Phythian kicked the conversion to bring the score to within two.

The Jets would hold onto their slim margin to win the game and hand the Knights a second loss on the bounce.

The Cup side currently sit in eighth spot and will take on the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles in the next round this Sunday.

NSW Cup Highlights: Jets v Knights

Jersey Flegg Cup - Knights 12-34 Sharks

The Knights Jersey Flegg side went down by 22 points to the Sharks in a curtain-raiser to the NRL game last Friday.

The Sharks opened the scoring two minutes into the match before Cronulla's Kade Dykes produced a five-minute double before the 20th minute mark.

Jyris Glamuzina got the Knights first two minutes later to bridge the margin.

The Sharks would however score another three tries after the break to extend their lead.

Brock Greacen scored a late consolation try for the Knights albeit the side would take its second loss of the campaign.

The Knights sit in ninth ahead of a clash with Manly in another pre-game match for the NRL fixture this Thursday.

Jersey Flegg Cup: Round 4 Highlights

SG Ball Cup - Knights 76-0 Dragons

The SG Ball side have achieved the biggest margin of the year across any grade running out 76-point victors against the Dragons last Saturday.

A side with enormous potential, the team ran in a whopping 14 tries in a demolition of the Red V.

Fullback, Fletcher Sharpe, had a game to remember scoring an impressive six tries.

Luke Pietzner scored a double while Oryn Keeley, Tyler Moodie, Noah Nailagoliva, Liam Sutton, Cooper Bigeni and Ethan Ferguson all notched a four-pointer each.

The result moves the team into second spot and only a win away from leaders, the Sydney Roosters.

The team will take on the Penrith Panthers in another huge game to conclude the regular season this Saturday at Maitland Sports Ground.

SG Ball Cup: Round 8 Highlights

Tarsha Gale Cup - Knights 32-10 Dragons

The Tarsha Gale side also scored a resounding 22-point win over the Dragons last Saturday.

The six tries to two victory was the side's third win on the bounce and puts them in a strong position heading into the final game of the season.

Tori Brazier scored a first half double while Sophie Clancy also notched one to give the Knights a strong start to the game.

The Dragons would score on the 20th minute mark before Newcastle's Kyah Watters crossed the stripe to give the side a 14-point advantage going into the change of ends.

After the break, Alyssa Shoulders and Mia Middleton both scored to wrap up the two points for the Tarsha Gale outfit.

The side currently sit in third and will take on the Penrith Panthers next round at Maitland Sports Ground.

Tarsha Gale Cup: Round 8 Highlights

Harold Matthews Cup - Knights 28-18 Dragons

The Harold Matthews side made it a clean sweep of results for the Junior Rep sides winning by 10 points against the dragons.

After a tough start to the season, the result is the second consecutive win for the Harold Matthews side.

The side ran in five tries with Jarred Williams posting a double.

Jermaine McEwen, Navren Willett and Fletcher Thompson also made their way to the try-line.

The Harold Matthews side currently sit in 10th ahead of a crucial game against the Panthers this Saturday.
