Barnett: 'It’s a challenge I’ve really enjoyed'

On the latest edition of the KNIGHTS // HQ Podcast, we caught up with two key nib Newcastle Knights players in Mitch Barnett and Jake Clifford.

Barnett had been itching to jump on the podcast to discuss all things from the current season.

Nicknamed 'The Enforcer' for his playing-style, Barnett was at his damaging and inspiring best in the side’s last start win against the Cronulla Sharks.

The 27-year-old drew praise for his brilliant performance and spoke about his distinct style of play.

“It’s obviously a good feeling when positive things are being said about you,” Barnett said on the KNIGHTS // HQ Podcast.

“I’ve played the game the way I’ve always played it.

“Probably could tidy up a few areas in terms of my discipline but it’s the only way I know how to play it.”

Barnett was named in a five-man leadership group at the start of the season and reflected on his growing role.

“It’s a good challenge for me,” Barnett said.

“It’s probably a part of my game off the field that I need to work the most on in being a leader.

“It’s a challenge I’ve really enjoyed.

“It’s also helped me grow off the field."

For Jake Clifford, the five-eight spoke his incredible journey of joining the club mid-season from the North Queensland Cowboys.

The 23-year-old has settled into the side quickly and established a pivotal partnership in the halves with Mitchell Pearce.

Clifford spoke about his intial transition into the team and a great mate picking him up from the airport on his arrival to Newcastle.

“It was a very quick transition for myself knowing at the start of the week I was leaving,” Clifford said.

“I played Friday night and was on a plane Sunday and then watched the boys play.

“Ever since I’ve got here, the boys have welcomed me in really well and I’ve fit in pretty well as well.

“The only thing that was different was the weather was a big hit for me.

“Kalyn and I go back a little bit into school footy and (Cowboys) 20’s days.

“It was good of him to come pick me up to rekindle that connection and friendship."
