Joey's Rd3 tips: tight matches and tough picks

It may just prove to be one of the toughest rounds in recent NRL history to tip as NRL clubs return to action for the first time in two months following a pandemic break.

That hasn’t stopped Andrew ‘Joey’ Johns from dishing out his tips for another weekend though and considering he’s only picked three wrong from the first two round, his picks might just help you decide yours.

In his new series previewing and reviewing every single nib Newcastle Knights game in 2020, the Eighth Immortal will also be providing his tips for all eight games, every round.

Broncos v Eels

Joey’s Tip: Eels

In a game that should provide much excitement that’s been lost over the past months, Johns has backed the team currently sitting at the top of the ladder to continue on past the Broncos despite playing at Suncorp Stadium.

Joey felt the exclusions of Tevita Pangai Junior and David Fifita were too big of losses when taking on the Eels.

Cowboys v Titans

Joey’s Tip: Cowboys

It’s been a tough start to the season for the Titans as they squander at the bottom of the table and Joey has predicted that’s where they’ll stay for another round.

Picking the Cowboys to grab their second win of the season, the rather large change in personnel for the Gold Coast side was something that worried Joey.

“All new spine for Titans,” Joey said.

“Tyrone Roberts at fullback? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him play fullback in the NRL or Super League. I think he’ll be seeing a lot of torpedo bombs.”

Glasby: Penrith prep, squad changes

Roosters v Rabbitohs

Joey’s Tip: Roosters

This one is Johns’ big tip for the weekend.

The two traditional rivals will battle it out on Friday night and although the defending premiers have yet to taste victory in 2020, Joey has tipped them to knock off Souths.

Warriors v Dragons

Joey’s Tip: Dragons

Both teams are looking for their first win of the season when they meet at Central Coast Stadium, but given the impact these unusual times are having on the New Zealand club, Joey is going with the Dragons.

Joey Rd3 preview: Smart buy, kicking key, Hoy debut

Sharks v Tigers

Joey’s Tip: Tigers

This game is a tough one to pick as both the Tigers and the Sharks have shown top qualities, but not enough over the course of 80 minutes.

Nonetheless, Joey is going with the side who have already managed one win this year – the Wests Tigers.

Storm v Raiders

Joey's Tip: Storm

This game is set to be a cracker as both Melbourne and Canberra currently remain undefeated.

Considering the Storm have the home advantage though, the Newcastle Knights legend has chosen against the Raiders and predicts their first loss is coming this Saturday.

Pearce: Motivation, debutants, depth, impact

Panthers v Knights

Joey's Tip: Knights

The Great Man has once again picked his former club to continue their winning streak and stay close to the top of the ladder.

Sea Eagles v Bulldogs

Joey's Tip: Sea Eagles

“It’ll be a tight one" Johns said about this all-Sydney battle.

However, he’s going with the ‘local’ side as Manly host the Bulldogs on the Central Coast which would continue the Bulldogs winless start to 2020.
