Season Review: Sione Mata'utia

2019 had a little bit of everything for Sione Mata’utia.

Positionally speaking, Mata’utia was asked to cover everywhere from the forward pack to wing and everywhere in between.

The 23-year-old was solid throughout the year and played well wherever he was asked to cover defensively. He also reached his second career milestone, playing his 100th game against Brisbane in round 15.

Mata’utia’s season remained somewhat settled, despite a shoulder injury keeping him out for a few weeks mid-season.

Overall, Mata’utia crossed for five tries in 2019, while also managing to break the opposition line eight times. He averaged 63 run metres per game and tackled at a little under 84% efficiency.

With solid numbers year-round, including a mammoth 194 run metre effort against North Queensland, Mata’utia will be set for another big season in 2020.
