Ponga breaks silence on injury

In a huge blow for the nib Newcastle Knights, Kalyn Ponga was scratched from the side, just one hour to prior to kick off.

The Origin star's withdrawal was a huge shock to Knights fans, and questions were immediately raised around his participation in the Origin decider.

Ponga spoke to Fox League pre-game and gave an update on the situation.

"We were monitoring the situation all week," Ponga told Fox League.

"I came to the ground today expecting to play, but it hasn't pulled up as well as I hoped it would.

"I will get scans hopefully tomorrow, and go from there.

Queensland Maroons coach Kevin Walters will have selection headaches if Ponga is not available for selection, however the young fullback is optimistic he will be fit for Origin 3.

"I don't think I will be in doubt, I think I will be fine.

"There wasn't a moment (where I thought I was unfit), it was just generally sore.

"I also had a cork I was focusing on, and because of that cork I was favouring the other leg, which hasn't helped.

"I'm expecting to play (Origin 3)."
