Knights set for historic Origin match

Two Newcastle Knights are set to part of an historic Under 18 women’s representative match, that will be played as a double header before the Women’s State of Origin in June.

Caitlan Johnston and Olivia Kernick from the Knights Tarsha Gale side have been selected in the preliminary NSW Under 18 women’s squad.

They are among 17 talented youngsters who will join the NSW Women’s Origin squad for a training session at the NSWRL centre of excellence this weekend.

The match in June, organised in conjunction with the NRL and the QRL, provides another pathway for aspiring women rugby league players.

It reflects a boom period of growth for the women’s game in NSW which has seen participation numbers increase by 60 per cent last year.

NSWRL Head of Performance Alan Thompson said: “It’s exciting to see the stars of the future will get a chance to shine on a bigger stage before the Women’s State of Origin match this season.”
