J SAF ON THE MEND

If all goes to plan injured nib Newcastle Knights prop Jacob Safiti could return to the field as early as Round 2.

The 22-year-old's recovery is ahead of schedule after breaking his leg as a result of an off-field incident.

He was expected to be sidelined for more than four months but is on track for an early return.

"At this stage, Jacob is well ahead of where we thought he might be," Head of Physical Performance Balin Cupples told The Newcastle Herald.

"He's been back to the specialist who is really happy with his progress. The screws he had put in during the surgery are where they should be.

"If they stay in place and he doesn't require further surgery which is obviously the hope, we could see him ready to go as early as round two. Any sort of setback from here on in may delay that though."

Saifiti only played eight NRL games in the 2018 season due to injury but had fully recovered from two shoulder operations and was training hard in the first four weeks of pre-season before injuring his leg.

"It was the best he had trained since I've been here without doubt," Knights coach Nathan Brown said.

"He was a long way ahead of where he had been, training-wise."
