Hilarious story behind Buderus becoming ‘Bedsy’

We all know him as 'Bedsy' but just how did Danny Buderus earn the nickname?

In his fifth year with the Newcastle Knights, a ticketing mix-up at the airport led to the hooker securing the name all rugby league fans have come to know him by.

This is his story.

"In 1999, we were heading to New Zealand," Buderus explained.

"We got to the airport and our team manager at the time was Dave Morley.

"Dave was handing out the plane tickets and he's gone: Andrew Johns, Matt Gidley, Johnny Beds R Us.

"That's how it was spelt. J. Bedrus. He goes 'who the hell is Johnny Beds R Us?' and I'm thinking 'that must be mine'.

"It's Bedsy. It went from there. Any time you get a nickname, people think it's a sign of acceptance, so it was pretty cool."
