Crushing blow as Knights 20s season ends

The season is over for the Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg side.

Penrith delivered a crushing 30-26 defeat on Saturday in the dying seconds of their grand final qualifier.

It was a slow start for the Knights who were down 12-0 after just 10 minutes before the red and blue hit back.

Tom Starling sparked the attack when he went down the short side, finding Matt Cooper who put Justin Worley over unmarked off the back of some quick hands.

Starling got involved again just minutes later when he found Kurtis Dark on the short side who tapped it on to Starford T'oa.

Dark nailed the conversion to get within two points of the Panthers before Penrith hit back to extend the lead by eight points.

The Knights started the second half in thrilling fashion when T'oa got his second try.

It was a thrilling solo effort, where the centre stepped and fended past three defenders to narrow the margin.

Dark nailed the kick to narrow the gap 18-16.

Starling then broke through the guts to find Cooper on his inside and Dark converted to claim the lead 22-18.

But the game wasn't over.

Daine Laurie split the Knights defence with some dazzling footwork to level the scores and a conversion put the Panthers ahead by two.

When Tex Hoy dived over for try on the wing to switch the lead 26-24, the Knights looked like they were home but with 15 seconds remaining Laurie split the defence to put his winger over to end the Knights' season 30-26.
