Knights 20s claim minor premiership in thrilling fashion

Todd Lowrie's Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg outfit has claimed the minor premiership.

Having claimed a thrilling 28-26 win over Penrith on Saturday, the Knights finished the regular season at the top of the table.

It's a wonderful reward for an outfit which has run riot over the competition in 2018.

The Knights wasted little time asking questions of the opposition when halfback Phoenix Crossland delivered a bullet pass to the wing of Justin Worley but he was denied.

It didn't matter. Henry-Siriah Fuimaono crossed minutes later to post the first points of the day.

Kurtis Dark converted to push the Knights ahead 6-0 but the Panthers struck back two minutes later with a slick backline-movement.

With the Knights up by two, Benjamin Talty extended the lead when he busted through a staggered defence and a goal from Dark extended the lead to 12-4 after 23 minutes.

While the Panthers scored through Marlon Ritchie not long after the Talty try, Heath Gibbs ensured the visitors went into the break ahead after securing a short ball from Dark for a 16-10 lead.

Just moments after returning for the second half, the Knights continued their attacking raid with Talty putting Tex Hoy over after breaking through the middle before linking with his fullback who was in support.

Next it was Hoy doing the creating when he linked with Worley on the edge to push the score out 28-14.

Daine Laurie struck for Penrith with 12 minutes remaining to narrow the margin and when Adam Fearnley crossed, the home side ensured a grandstand finish.

Despite the Panthers throwing plenty at the Knights, they held on for a two-point victory.
