Story behind the nickname: How Shaun Kenny-Dowall became ‘Skids’

Have you ever wondered how Shaun Kenny-Dowall got his nickname?

While the media often refers to him by his initials SKD, his teammates refer to him as 'Skids' or 'Skidsy'.

So, how did it come to be? We went straight to the source to find out.

According to Kenny-Dowall, it all started with a tattoo.

"It started back in the 20s when I was playing for the Roosters," Kenny-Dowall explained to the Our Town Our Team podcast.

"We were on Mad Monday and I have a tattoo on my back, SKD, and one of the boys spotted it and started calling me 'Skid'.

"It sort of evolved from 'Skid' to 'Skidsy' to 'Skidy' to 'Skidy undies' and all sorts. It followed on from that and stuck throughout the years.

"I don't think too many people call me Shaun anymore. It's either 'Skid' or 'Skidsy'."

He got the SKD tattoo in the middle of his back when he first moved to Australia at the age of 16.
