In a game where Nathan Ross ran for more than 200 metres, Mitch Barnett scored a double and Danny Levi was at his scheming best, it's easy to overlook the other troops.

Mitchell Pearce's kicking game was on point yet again as the nib Newcastle Knights clinched a come from behind victory over the Gold Coast.

Daniel Saifiti was determined with every run but it was the performance of Connor Watson which had the players talking.

"I think Connor was the best player on the field," Pearce said.

"We weren't as good in defence and I thought we needed some attacking brilliance to get us over the line.

"I thought Connor's speed was one of the main reasons. Running five-eighths are real threats in the game and Connor was one of our best players."

Running for 161 metres and with a whopping 10 tackle breaks to his name, Watson was electric.

While the No.6 is not typically known for being a ball player, it was an inside ball to Shaun Kenny-Dowall which sealed victory for the Knights.

It's was a clutch moment but no fluke.

According to Pearce, his halves partner has been fine tuning his skulls under the tutelage of coach Nathan Brown.

"We've got a pretty handy attacking coach here in Browny who has slowed his ball playing up a lot," Pearce said.

"Everyone's starting to see his game evolving as a ball player.

"He's a natural runner and I think the best ball players are runners first so he's only going to evolve and Browny has been doing a lot of work with him.

"He won us the game (on Saturday)."
