Friday night didn't go to plan for the nib Newcastle Knights with a big loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at home.

Outside back Shaun Kenny-Dowall says that while the team has offered plenty in attack so far this season, there's still a lot of work to do in defence.

"Having Fitzy (Lachlan Fitzgibbon) out there on the right has changed the attack a bit where KP (Kalyn Ponga) is rolling on both sides and setting up tries on the left and right and everywhere," said Kenny-Dowall.

"Kalyn is doing a great job and I thought the attack was really working well."

The Knights winger knows it's defence that needs a strong focus.

"Souths had some big boys but that's no excuse, we didn't start with the right attitude or intent so we let far too many points in... that will be a big focus for us going in to the Panthers," he said.

"In the games that we have won our defence has been good.

Kenny-Dowall maintains consistency is also key.

"That's a big thing week in and week out, be competitive and get our game plan and our defence right," Kenny-Dowall explained.

"It's got to be consistent and we have to pick that up."
