Following the success of the Newcastle Knights U16s and U18s program in 2016, the club is delighted to announce the reappointment of SG Ball coach Tony Gleeson and Harold Matthews coach Mark Morrissey.
In 2016 the Harold Matthews team finished second to Parramatta, defeated 16 – 14 in the grand final, while the SG Ball team were defeated by the eventual winners Penrith in the preliminary final 24 – 18.
“Both coaches did an outstanding job with the individual development of the players and the collective results of their teams, and as a result the club has extended their coaching tenure,” Troy Pezet Knights Recruitment Manager (Juniors) said.
In addition to the outstanding team results, Tony Gleeson and Mark Morrissey played an instrumental part in the selection of eight Newcastle Knights juniors being selected to represent NSW against Queensland in the Origin curtain raisers.
Jock Madden, Phoenix Crossland, Tom Baker and Brock Gardner were selected in the Under 16s while Brodie Jones, Brendan O’Hagan, Tom Starling and Pasami Saulo for the Under 18s.
“To supply almost 25 per cent of the NSW team in one year, is a fantastic achievement for any club and Tony and Mark played a significant role in the development of the players,” Pezet added.
While the head coaches in SG Ball and Harold Matthews have been selected, the club is seeking applications for the head coach of Knights 15s and 17s development programs, assistant coaches for all squads, sports trainers and strength and conditioning coaches for next season.
“These are very important positions in our club as the development and nurturing of generation next is critical to our club’s long term future and sustainability,” Pezet concluded.
