Newcastle Knights coach Todd Lowrie spoke to Knights TV following the team's 36-6 loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

The NYC Knights started the contest well and were first to put points on the board, but struggled to take hold of the match in the second half.

"It was very disappointing. Our first half was okay, but we always knew we were going with the wind and that the second half was going to be a bit tougher," he said.

"They were far too good for us.

"They are a good side and came out and performed really well. We had a couple of penalties go against us and they capitalised on that and scored some tries.

"We couldn't pull it back from there."

Lowrie says the coming week at training will be all about making ground ahead of the side's next match against the Canberra Raiders in Canberra on Sunday.

"We have a lot of things to improve on after today," he said.

"Defensively we need to be a lot better. We were good in patches, but not for long periods.

"We hope to train all week and be a bit better in Canberra."
