Newcastle Knight Dane Gagai looks to back up his superb State of Origin efforts when he meets the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday afternoon.

The Queensland Origin winger played game I for the Queensland Maroons on Wednesday night before travelling back to Newcastle and departing with the Newcastle Knights to travel north on Thursday.

The team conducted its final training run in Townsville on Friday in preparation for the challenging clash against 2015 premiers, the Cowboys.

Gagai underwent a light training sesssion with the team, and while carrying a few minor bumps and bruises from the high intensity Origin game, he said he felt fit and ready for Saturday's match.

"It was the toughest game I have ever played in and was a bit different to game three last year," he told his teammate Sione Mata'utia following the training session.

"I was fortunate enough to be on the back end of a good team. NSW fielded a good, tough side and I'm definitely feeling it so I'm trying to get my body right for tomorrow."

The Knights expect the Cowboys to come out firing in front of a home crowd on Saturday afternoon.

"They are on top of the table for a reason and have been in good form all year," he said.

"I think we just need to go out there and execute our plays and keep ball control to the highest we can.

"We need line speed because they definitely play with high energy and we are going to have to match that.

"I think the boys looked good (at training) and everyone was getting into position and knowing their roles which is definitely going to be the key in tomorrow's game."

The Knights v Cowboys match kicks off at 5.30 on Saturday at 1300 Smiles Stadium.
