While emerging Newcastle Knight Jack Cogger could have been forgiven for staying under the radar in his first official pre-season with the NRL squad, the 18-year-old didn’t hold back.

He out-run his more experienced counterparts in the challenging beep test on Thursday morning at Newcastle Basketball Stadium.

The young NYC halfback achieved 13.9 in the endurance fitness test with his Under 20s teammate and halves partner Brock Lamb bowing out just moments before him.

Robbie Rochow made a dominant return from injury reaching level 12.12 to poll third, closely followed by Jack Stockwell on 12.2.

Thursday's session launched the start of pre-season training and included a number of young players who were taking part in their first full time pre-season as well the Knights' NRL squad members.

A number of players are yet to return from their break, including Dane Gagai and Jake Mamo, while the likes of new recruit Trent Hodkinson and Jarrod Mullen watched on from the sidelines.

The Beep Test's Top 5:

1. Jack Cogger 13.9
2. Brock Lamb 13.3
3. Robbie Rochow 12.12
4. Jack Stockwell 12.2
5. Sione Mata’utia 12.2
