Newcastle Knights utility back Dane Gagai has been called into the Queensland Maroons camp at Sanctuary Cove.

After training with his Knights teammates on Thursday morning, Gagai is expected to have his first training run with the Maroons later this afternoon.

With fullback Billy Slater currently receiving ongoing management on his shoulder and centre Greg Inglis unwell, Maroons coach Mal Meninga said it was necessary to extend the squad ahead of game one in Sydney next week.

Gagai isn't ruled out of the Knights Round 11 match against the Brisbane Broncos. The 24-year-old could be released back to the Club in time for Monday's game.
