Sione Mata’utia has been awarded the NYC Player of the Year Award which was presented at the Newcastle Knights 2014 Presentation Night on Thursday rounding out a stellar season for the young Knight.

"It means alot to get recognition from the coaches, it's who you want to work for, your coaches and teammates as well," Mata'utia said. 

"I'm truly honoured and thank the man above for his blessings as well as my mum and my family."

The 18-year-old, who made his NRL Debut in Round 20, was also recognised with the Rookie of the Year Award after a breakthrough year where he scored seven tries in seven matches. 

The youngest of the Mata’utia brothers travels to Papua New Guinea on Friday with 2014 Danny Buderus Medallist Beau Scott to play in the Prime Minister’s XIII on Sunday against the PNG Kumuls.
