Kurt Gidley is first to admit that Newcastle’s defence hasn’t been overly strong to start the season.

In the opening three rounds, the Knights have conceded 84 points in losses to the Panthers, Raiders and Storm.

This lack of defensive steel changed on Sunday on the back of the Club’s 30-0 shutout of the Sharks at Hunter Stadium.

Gidley was rapt with his side’s defence against Cronulla and has called on them to continue their strong tackling when they take on the Cowboys in Townsville next Monday.

“I think today was a great step forward defensively,” Gidley says.

“We weren’t where we wanted to be at in the first three rounds defensively, but I think today was a good step forward.

“We can take plenty positives out of that.

“We’ve still got a job to do each week and we’ve still got plenty of things to work on."
