The Newcastle Knights has named an 18-man extended squad for Saturday’s opening match of the season against the Penrith Panthers at Sportingbet Stadium.
Captain Kurt Gidley is named to play at hooker while new recruit Michael Dobson will partner Tyrone Roberts in the halves.
Travis Waddell secured the utility role on an extended bench, which also includes Chris Houston, Alex McKinnon, Adam Cuthbertson and David Fa’alogo.
Jeremy Smith, who had a knee clash in the final trial match in Tamworth and was in some doubt, is expected to play in the round one encounter in Penrith.
