The nib Newcastle Knights are continuing to strengthen their player development pathway with the launch of a new mentoring initiative linking Elite Academy players with established NRL and NRLW stars.
The program forms part of the club’s weekly Elite Academy schedule, which combines rehab and recovery with education and high-level coaching.
It gives a group of the club’s promising young players direct access to senior players for one-on-one guidance both on and off the field.
Director of Football Chris James said the initiative reflects the club’s commitment to developing talent from within.
“For a young player, having direct access to our established NRL and NRLW stars is an invaluable resource. Leaning on their knowledge and experience is a way we can holistically support player development here at the Knights,” James said.
The mentoring program has been fast-tracked ahead of the 2026 Pathways season and will see senior players paired with Elite Academy athletes, providing support around performance, wellbeing, and the transition toward elite rugby league.
“We see these young men and women as future stars and leaders of our club, so giving them every resource possible to achieve that is paramount,” James said.
“Our senior players jumped at the opportunity to give back as well. They know the value of having guidance and support early in their own careers and what it can do for a young player’s confidence.”
The initiative is part of the Knights’ broader Pathways Strategy, with a similar program to be introduced for the Academy girls once their season begins, further strengthening the connection between the club’s development system and its elite squads.
