Knights appoint Elite Pathways Coaches

The nib Newcastle Knights are pleased to confirm the appointment of two key pathway coaching positions for the next two years, with Matt Lantry returning to coach SG Ball and Alicia-Kate Hawke expanding her coaching remit to include the women’s Tarsha Gale Cup.

The dual appointments represent a significant investment in the Knights elite coaching system, with a specific focus on the critically important under 19 pathways level, for both the males and females.

Lantry returns to coach the Knights in a part time capacity, while continuing his role as Head Coach of the Maitland Pumpkin Pickers. His reign at the helm of the Pickers includes the last three consecutive Newcastle Rugby League premiership titles and a minor premiership already secured for 2025.

Incoming nib Newcastle Knights Director of Football, Chris James, said Lantry’s return to the Knights coaching ranks is a strategic step in the Club’s future direction.

"Matt's return is a key part of our significant investment in our pathways programs," said James.

“We have a goal to become the leading development club in the NRL, to achieve this we need the best people developing our best young talent and we believe Matt is a perfect fit.

“There is no doubt Matt has been the leading coach in the local area for several years, with a proven record of developing young talent, winning premierships and a clear understanding of what it takes to represent the people of Newcastle and the Hunter.

“We presented our future vision to Matt and I'm excited he has chosen to be part of this direction.”

Hawke, the current Knights NRLW Assistant Coach and NSW Women’s Origin Assistant Coach, will lead the club’s Tarsha Gale under 19 programs for the next two seasons.

James shared his delight in expanding the services of Hawke, who is widely regarded as one of the most progressive women’s elite coaches.

“Alicia-Kate's appointment to lead our Tarsha Gale program is equally exciting," said James.

“Her experience in our NRLW and NSW Women’s Origin programs brings elite-level expertise directly into our female pathways, helping us continue to strive towards our vision of developing elite players.

“Having coaches of this calibre working with our under 19 programs, confirms our commitment to developing the next generation of Knights at the highest possible standard."

Currently a Senior NRLW Assistant Coach, Alicia-Kate Hawke will expand her role to take over as Tarsha Gale Head Coach in 2026.
