Knights defeat Tigers in tough Indigenous Round battle

The nib Newcastle Knights have notched their fifth consecutive NRLW victory, tightening their grip on third place with a 30-6 win on Awabakal Land at McDonald Jones Stadium.

With the forecast rain mercifully holding at bay for much of the contest, the Knights were forced to work hard on an already-heavy track to record a win which sees them remain unbeaten against the Tigers at NRLW level.

With five straight wins now in the bank, the Knights will now look towards a massive two weeks with the Roosters and Broncos among their next two fixtures.

How it played out:

With the rain holding off and the game kicking off in mostly dry conditions, it didn't take long for the scoring to begin.

Sporting an incredible, Renae Lamb-designed Indigenous Jersey, the Knights took just three minutes to trouble the scorers with Sheridan Gallagher storming over to open the scoring after Yasmin Clydsdale broke the game open with a typical surge through the middle.

Gallagher gets our first

While the Tigers managed to strike back through Emily Bass, it didn't take long for the Knights to pick their left edge apart again.

Operating like clockwork, the Knights moved the ball right to again send Gallagher over untouched for an early double.

That left the red and blue with a 10-6 lead after a hard-fought first half.

The second stanza began in much the same way as the first, with both sides slugging it out as conditions began to worsen heading into the final quarter of the game.

The Tigers were eventually the first to crack, with Sienna Yeo getting her first try in Knights colours to extend the home side's lead to 10.

The Knights then sealed victory with Tess Staines crossing out wide for a 20-6 lead.

Evah McEwen added to the scoresheet with two terrific late efforts, giving the Knights a commanding win in the inaugural NRLW Indigenous Round.

What's next:

After back-to-back home games, the Knights will hit the road next week for a heavy-weight clash with the Roosters at Polytec Stadium on the Central Coast.

The Knights will then return home for an Old Boys Day Double Header against the Broncos at McDonald Jones Stadium. Tickets for that game can be purchased by clicking here.
