The next generation of rugby league stars took centre stage last weekend as the Hunter Junior Rugby League Under 7s Tackle Ready Gala Day lit up McDonald Jones Stadium.
Marking a key milestone in the development of junior players, the gala day welcomed hundreds of eager Under 7s from Clubs across the region to the home of the nib Newcastle Knights, as they made the exciting transition from tag to tackle footy.
The event provided a fun, safe, and structured introduction to contact rugby league, with NRL Development Officers, club volunteers, and coaches on hand to ensure players were comfortable in playing this new version of the game the right way — with an emphasis on safe technique, teamwork, and confidence.
Players representing dozens of local Clubs from across the region were able to play their first games' of tackle football on the hallowed turf where their heroes play every weekend, in an aim to walk in the footsteps of local juniors such as Phoenix Crossland, Fletcher Sharpe and Brodie Jones.
Adding to the excitement, a host of special guests were in attendance, including NRL talents Tyson Frizell and Jack Cogger, along with members of the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership team.

Hunter Junior Rugby League hits McDonald Jones Stadium
The players spent time mingling with teams, offering advice, taking photos, and cheering on the kids as they took to the field - creating lifelong memories for the young participants and their families.
The day was a celebration not just of rugby league, but of community, growth, and the grassroots passion that drives the game forward in the Hunter region.
