Knights and Penrith play out golden point thriller

The nib Newcastle Knights and Penrith Panthers have played out an absolute golden-point thriller at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night.

After a back and forth battle, two field goals in the dying stages including a long-ranger from Tyson Gamble and one from Panther Nathan Cleary sent the match into golden point.

In a heartbreaking final period, Cleary kicked a second field goal in golden point to win the game for the visitors, 16-15.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:

1st min - The match kicked off in front of a huge 26,084 strong crowd at the home of the Knights.

5th min - Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary kicked an early penalty goal for the away side.

12th min - The Knights had the opening try shortly after.

Smart work from Jackson Hastings out of dummy-half found Tyson Gamble, who dummied into the line and crossed the stripe to get Newcastle on the board.

16th min - The Knights had another in quick succession with Frizell getting over.

Dom Young almost found the line in the corner after a well worked move down the right, but from the ensuing play Frizell was on hand for our second.

22nd min - Penrith hit back through winger Brian To'o to bridge the deficit.

29th min - Phoenix Crossland produced some individual brilliance to score our third of the night.

A deft kick from the dummy-half rolled into the in-goal, and the kicker won the race for the ball to plant it down.

39th min - Penrith looked to have scored a second on the brink of half-time, but 

Scott Sorenson knocked the ball on on the grounding. Some desperate Knights defence was on hand to keep the Panthers out.

40th min - The Knights took a 14-6 lead into the change of ends.

54th min - Nathan Cleary converted his second penalty goal to put the scores to within six.

57th min - The Panthers were level when Jaeman Salmon crashed over next to the posts.

77th min - Tyson Gamble kicked the first field goal of the night with a huge kick to give the Knights the lead.

79th min - Nathan Cleary equalised in the final minute with a field goal to send the game to extra-time.

80th min - The match was headed for golden point finishing 15-all.

81st min - Cleary kicked a second field goal to win the game for Penrith.

The Knights will travel to North Queensland to play the Cowboys next Saturday night at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
