Second half fightback achieves home win over the Raiders

The nib Newcastle Knights have achieved their second win of the 2023 campaign with a 24-14 win over the Canberra Raiders at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After trailing at the break, the red and blue turned on the heat in the second half with three quick-fire tries before the 50th minute mark.

The team kept the Raiders scoreless in the second half to secure their first home win in seven starts.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT

1st min - The match kicked off in great conditions and in front of 15,106 Members and supporters at McDonald Jones Stadium.

4th min - Raiders struck first through Hudson Young after a Corey Harawira-Naera strip put the away side on the attack. 

12th min - The red and blue hit back soon after with a man on debut getting his first try in the colours.

A brilliant set play freed up Greg Marzhew and the winger powered his way to the corner for the Knights first of the game.

18th min - Bradman Best showed his strength to score the Knights second.

The centre barged his way over the line to slam the ball down to put Newcastle ahead.

Best too hard to handle

25th min - The Raiders would hit back with a try of their own as Jack Wighton dove over under the sticks.

39th min - On the half-time hooter, Matt Frawley added a two-point field goal for the Raiders as the visitors took a 14-8 lead in into the break.

44th min - Newcastle came out charging in the second as Marzhew would have his second on debut to put the Knights in front.

A long floating pass from Tyson Gamble found the winger unmarked again and the Club debutant made no mistake in the corner.

45th min - The Knights were on a roll, full of energy and would strike in quick succession.

Down the right edge again, Dane Gagai pinned the ears back close to the line to score our fourth of the game.

The Knights are running hot

49th min - Raiders five-eighth Jack Wighton was sent to the sin-bin for a late shot on Jackson Hastings.

50th min - Newcastle made the Raiders pay with their fifth try.

Tyson Frizell crossed over to extend the Knights lead out to 10 points with 30 to play.

70th min - The Knights were showing plenty of resolve in defence to repel multiple Raiders attacks.

80th min - The final whistle sounded with the Knights claiming the two points.

WHAT IS NEXT

The Knights will travel to regional NSW in Round 5 taking on arch-rivals, the Manly Sea-Eagles, in Mudgee next Saturday.
