The nib Newcastle Knights have gone down 28-10 to the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium.
In Jayden Brailey's 100th first grade game, the Knights staged a comeback in the second half with two tries but fell short against the Broncos.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Knights will play for pride and aim to finish the season on a high.
The Knights looked dangerous in the opening stages gaining good field position on numerous occasions, although it was the Broncos who struck first.
Selwyn Cobbo scored for the home side 18 minutes into the game to open the scoring at Suncorp Stadium.
Newcastle continued to have greater possession and were completing their sets at 80 percent.
Although, the Broncos added two late tries in the second half through Corey Oates and Ezra Mam to take an 18-0 lead into the break.
Opportunities were hard to come by in the opening period of the second half until Daniel Saifiti powered his way to the line.
The forward received the ball from milestone man Brailey to crash over next to the sticks and notch his first try of the season.
It was game on when Bradman Best posted points with 14 minutes to play.
A fast move down the left freed up the centre and Best made no mistake to bring the scores to within eight.
With the game in the balance, the home side provided the killer blow with Selwyn Cobbo scoring his second and third of the night within the final ten minutes to claim the victory.
The Knights will be back at home next Sunday for their Voice for Mining Round 23 clash against the Canberra Raiders.
