Early lead slips as Knights fall to Souths at home

The nib Newcastle Knights have gone down 40-28 to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night.

In a high scoring affair and leading 16-6 midway through the first half, the visitors scored six tries to take the two points.

In front of a home crowd of 18,621, the result is the 11th loss of the campaign.

It was a brutal start to the match with Rabbitohs halfback Lachlan Ilias forced off the field after copping friendly fire from a head knock.

Souths would post first points with Cody Walker darting over next to the posts 10 minutes into the game.

The Knights hit back soon after from an unbelievable passage of play.

Souths utility, Kodi Nikorima, look destined to score but a flying Dom Young pulled off an incredible try-saver to deny the away team.

Flying Young comes out of nowhere

Scramble defence kept the Rabbitohs out and forced an error.

Tyson Frizell broke through the back line and the counter attacked. From the ensuing play, it was the try-saver who became the try-scorer, Dom Young.

Young dived over in the corner to continue his strong form.

Newcastle would take the lead only four minutes later with an unlikely try-scorer getting over the stripe.

Edrick Lee climbed high off a kick and pushed the ball back. David Klemmer was there to pick up the ball and dived over.

The try was the front-rower forward's first since 2017 and breaks a five-season drought.

Edrick Lee produced another brilliant try-assist for his outside centre for the Knights third try of the night.

Try-scorer last week, assist-maker the next, Lee again went high to claim the ball and found an offload to Bradman Best who strolled over on his first game back from injury.

Best in the business

Souths worked their way back into the game with two quickfire tries down their lethal left edge.

Left winger, Richard Kennar, scored a double on the 30th and 33rd minute mark to give the Bunnies a narrow two-point lead.

Walker scored an intercept try to take their lead out to more than a converted try just before half-time.

Straight after the break, Kennar would have his third of the night to take the Bunnies lead out to two converted tries.

Tevita Tatolo got the Bunnies sixth after diving on a loose ball in the in-goal putting Souths out to 34-16 with 25 minutes to play.

Jayden Brailey entered the match after six-months on the sideline.

Needing points to revive their hopes, Edrick Lee brought the Knights back into the contest scoring a four-pointer on the 58th minute mark.

A bullet pass from Adam Clune found the winger in a copy and paste from one of the previous week's tries.

However, the Rabbitohs had their seventh try only minutes later to all but wrap up the game with Jaxson Paulo getting on the scoresheet.

Mitchell Barnett scored a late consolation try after receiving a short ball from Jayden Brailey to bridge the margin to 10.

The Knights chased two decisive tries in the final minutes but couldn't get the ball over the line.

David Klemmer was a late send off.

The side will look to bounce back when they travel to play rivals, Manly next weekend.
