Knights handed defeat by the Panthers at home

The nib Newcastle Knights have gone down 42-6 to the Penrith Panthers at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The reigning premiers scored seven tries while the Knights posted one late four-pointer.

The result is Newcastle's ninth loss of the campaign after 14 rounds of the premiership.

The match kicked off in front of a strong 21,332 crowd number for Members Appreciation Round in Newcastle.

Penrith started fast and opened the scoring five minutes into the contest.

Jarome Luai broke the line and found Nathan Cleary in support who got to the line and converted his own try.

The reigning premiers would have their second soon after when Viliame Kikau made his way over.

The forward barged his way to the line to score with Kalyn Ponga coming out worse for ware.

The fullback was ruled out for the remainder of the game failing his head injury assessment.

The Panthers continued their momentum when Cleary kicked a 40/20.

From the ensuing set, Penrith made no mistake with Taylan May scoring in the corner.

And with five minutes to play in the first half on the other wing, Brian To'o acrobatically scored the Panthers fourth of the afternoon.

A late Nathan Cleary penalty goal had the victors lead 26-0 at the break.

Penrith continued their dominance after the break.

Centres Izack Tago and Stephen Crichton both scored four-pointers before To'o scored his second with 11 minutes to play.

Edrick Lee streaked down the wing to score a late consolation for the Knights as the Panthers would hold on for their victory.

The match finished 42-6 to the visitors.

Newcastle will look to respond when they travel down to play Canberra next round.
