In a week where the NRL has been swamped with negative headlines, two nib Newcastle Knights have shown rugby league is filled with good people.

Connor Watson and Edrick Lee used their lunch break from training this week by volunteering their time for a good cause.

The boys teamed up with Awabakal to deliver Christmas hampers around Newcastle.

"I find for myself personally, if I engage in community, my football has something to play for," Lee told 7 News Sydney.

Awabakal are an Aboriginal community-controlled health service.

Both Watson and Lee have Indigenous backgrounds and volunteered to hand out hampers to some people who use Awabakal's services.

After visiting some homes, the boys ventured to the head office.

They joined a group of  'mum's and bubs' who all received hampers.

"We know we are in a position to give back and put our hand up any time we can," Lee said.
