Key piece to 2019 roster puzzle

Coach Nathan Brown finally has his man.

Following a successful recruitment drive over the off-season, the nib Newcastle Knights landed their marquee man in Test forward David Klemmer this week.

The Kangaroos and NSW Origin prop is the 28th player on the Knights' 2019 roster, with two spots still to be filled.

Brown has made no secret that the Knights have been chasing a forward of Klemmer's calibre.

But he may not be the final piece to the puzzle.

Brown confirmed the Club is in the market for a utility type player but the signing of Klemmer to a five-year-deal is a huge coup for the red and blue.

"It certainly is a very important piece. You need to get forward in this game to do well," Brown added.

"All the good sides have good, big players.

"With Klemmer, we get a really good experienced one.

"What we've recruited over the past two years, Klem (Klemmer) coming along is a part of the piece for us to go to another level."

Klemmer has signed with the Knights until the end of the 2023 season.

The towering forward has played 17 tests for Australia and 12 games for New South Wales but Brown believes Klemmer's best is yet to come.

"We wanted a Test player, an Origin player. Things worked out that Klem could come," Brown said.

"His age is probably perfect at 25. His best years are ahead of him."
