With the nib Newcastle Knights announcing the signing of Chris Heighington on a one-year deal, Knights TV spoke to the veteran prop about what his goals are for 2018.

The 317 game forward said he has spoken with coach Nathan Brown, and knows what his role will be.

“I spoke to Browny about that and he needs me as much off the field as on the field… he actually said probably more off the field,” Heighington explained.

“Just to show those young guys how it’s done and how to play consistent footy year in and year out.”

The Club has one of the youngest forward packs in the competition, with Daniel and Jacob Saifiti, Josh King, Mitch Barnett, Sione Mata’utia and Lachlan Fitzgibbon all regulars.

The oldest player in that group is Barnett at 23, who is still 11 years younger than two-time premiership winner Heighington.

“If I can see these guys grow as players after I retire, as really good people off the field as well as players for the Knights, then I’ve done my job,” the prop said.

“There are some great young kids that have come through the system here, hopefully I can help out in that area as well.

“I’ve done that at the Sharks for the last few years, helping their academy teams.”

Heighington is the eighth signing for 2018, and the England representative says he can’t wait to get involved with the new-look squad after the World Cup.

“2018 is going to be exciting, there’s been some really good signings.

“The signings have been a mixture of experience and young talent, and I think it’s a bright future for the Knights
