On Wednesday evening, 15-year-old Hannah had a special guest by her side at her Year 10 formal.
Last year Trent Hodkinson met Hannah, who was undergoing treatment for Ewing's sarcoma cancer, at John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
It was through the Tren7’s Kick for Kids program, which sees the halfback dedicate his kicking tee to kids in hospital for every round of the season.
Six months later Hannah finished her treatment, and was in remission. That was until she and her family received the worst news possible this May.
“We had five months of remission, and then in May of this year she had similar pain to when she was first diagnosed,” Hannah’s mother, Racheal, said.
“We went back to hospital and unfortunately we were told that Hannah’s cancer is incurable.”
The family set out to make Hannah’s time as enjoyable as possible, which included a trip to New Zealand last month.
Kurri Kurri High School also moved forward her Year 10 formal, so she could attend.
“It was Trent’s idea to come to the formal, it was something he really wanted to do,” Racheal added.
“She’s been so very, very sick for the last week or two, and we didn’t think she was going to make the formal.
“The doctors didn’t think she was going to make it, but she wasn’t going to miss the excitement and joy of tonight.”
Trent arrived at Hannah’s house before the formal and then they travelled to the event together.
Hannah’s whole year was waiting for her when she arrived, and they received a standing ovation as they got out of the car.
“He’s the sweetest man, and we love him,” Rachel said of Trent.
“Tonight has been unbelievable and we’ve just seen so much love for Hannah.
“She’ll never get another moment like this, and it’s pretty special.”
