On Thursday, inaugural Club captain Sam Stewart was at Knights headquarters to hand out debut jumpers before the team travelled to Auckland for their season opener against the New Zealand Warriors.

Of the five players that will be debuting for the Club, Sam Stone and Luke Yates will also be making their first grade debuts.

“Young Sam Stone... I’ve had a lot to do with him since he was a five-year-old,” Stewart said of the occasion.

“He grew up with my son and they were best mates so it was a thrill to give those jumpers to those boys.

“They’ve got a whole career in front of them, hopefully they can stay in Newcastle, it’s always been a very good breeding ground.”

Stewart said he is looking forward to watching the Knights take on the Warriors on Sunday.

“The Warriors have got a very experienced team and have probably got their best team on the park that they’ve had for a couple of years,” he explained.

“But if everyone plays together and their defence is right, they’ll be there at the end.”

The match kicks off at 2pm (AEST).
