Newcastle Knights winger Akuila Uate is focused on a strong defensive effort against the Wests Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Campbelltown Stadium.

The speedy winger played his first game on Sunday at Hunter Stadium after recovering from a knee injury he suffered against the Gold Coast Titans in Round 19.

Uate is confident he's feeling fitter this week and is keen to improve his form.

"The first game back was always going to be tough with fitness because I hadn't been training with the boys that week," he said.

"I just have to make up for all the mistakes I did on the weekend and will have full concentration."

Uate's focus this week will be in strengthening his defence in order to hold out the Tigers' strong attacking game.

As the season begins to wind down, he believes the Knights still have time to build quality performances.

"For me it's about playing as a team," he added.

"Hopefully this week we can pull it together and come home with a win."

The Knights travel south on Friday and will train in Sydney before taking on the Tigers on Saturday at Campbelltown Stadium.
