The Newcastle Knights have reflected on the Club’s rich past by paying tribute to all the Newcastle Knights who have played for the Club since its inception through its specially designed heritage jersey.

The heritage jersey design was based on the 1988 inaugural Newcastle Knights home jersey and features all 254 first grade Newcastle Knights players who have donned the red and blue between 1988 to 2014.

The logo of the Club’s major sponsor, Newpave appears in yellow to further more reflect the original 1988 design.

For the Club’s Director of Football Michael Hagan, (player number 37) the jersey represents the Club’s start and what it has come to represent.

“I think a lot of people will have a lot of fond memories about how the Club kicked off and I think this jumper was the first part of generating that support for the team,” Hagan said.

“It’s a bit of nostalgia and recognises just how many players have come through the Club.

“It says a bit about the sense of belonging for the fans and the players and I think the players will get a lift out of wearing it."

For Hagan, who played for the Newcastle Knights in its second year in the competition before coaching the team to the 2001 grand final, he cherishes the opportunity to contribute to the Club’s formative years.

“I guess it’s about how we came to from expectations in terms of how we played and the support that we had,” he said.

The fact the jersey lists all the players who have donned the Knights jersey from number 1, David Boyd in 1988 to Tyler Randell the 254th Knight to debut for the Club in 2014.

“We know the Old Boys are such an important thing to the fabric of our Club,” he said.

“This is just another way to pay homage to the players that started the Club and the players who are still wearing the jumper with pride and passion.”

Supporters will first see the Knights play on the specially designed Knights Heritage Jersey in the annual round 19 NRL Heritage Round and again at Hunter Stadium for the Old Boys game in Round 25.
