For many, recreational sport provides entertainment and a way to unwind, and it's no different for professional athletes.

While the Newcastle Knights relaxed between training sessions on Thursday, Nathan Ross questioned his teammates about what sport they enjoy away from the football field.

There are some keen surfers in the team including Dane Gagai and Tariq Sims who can be regularly spotted at Newcastle's most popular breaks.

"I like to get out in the water, get away from footy and clear the mind and try to catch a few waves," Gagai said.

New-recruit Tariq Sims is a starter on the long board and has enjoyed getting to know the best spots along the Hunter coastline.

"I enjoy going out there and shaking it out with the sharks," Tariq said.

Golf is another popular past-time among the players.

"We have a bit of a golf crew here at the club. It's good to get out and take my focus away from footy," Korbin Sims said.

"I find myself around the trees alot, so I bought a can of Bushmans to keep the mozzies away, but I don't think it'll work because I'm in there that much."

Korbin is sometimes joined on the green by Chanel Mata'utia who proved his golfing prowess at the Knights' Corporate Golf Day.

"I played yesterday with BJ (Leilua) and Sione, I really enjoy it," Chanel said.
