With the second week of pre-season training now complete, Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave Ballard reviews the week that was.

“While this is the end of week two, for some guys this was their first week back and they kicked off with the beep test,” Ballard says.

“Once again our best performer was Jake Mamo, who ran a 15.1 and did knock off Kurt Gidley (14.3).”

While last week Dane Gagai attributed his strong performance to a surfing holiday in Bali, Mamo believes two weeks spent in Canada helped him register such a high score.

“I did some sight-seeing and hiked some mountains, and maybe that helped in the beep test,” he explains.

“I carried a bad back through most of last season but it feels really good now after the break.

“I spent six weeks off not really doing anything and it feels good after a week back at training.”

Players who returned this week were greeted with a demanding schedule.

“On Monday the boys do a little bit of low-level skills as well as some speed work," Ballard explains.

“Tuesday is conditioning work, and that’s the really tough one for the week where there’s no way out for them.

“Wednesday is just recovery and then Thursday there’s a little bit of speed and agility work again.

“Friday we go a little bit lighter on them, because they hit another heavy session on the Saturday.”

Check back next Friday for Knights TV’s wrap of week three of pre-season.
