The Men of League Foundation is asking the rugby league community to pull up their socks and show their support for the Foundation as part of Men of League Weekend, which is held this weekend.

The Newcastle Knights' trainers will be proudly wearing the Men of League socks when the Knights take on the Parramatta Eels this Sunday at Pirtek Stadium.

All those involved in local junior and senior rugby league clubs are encouraged to partake in the initiative by purchasing a pair of commemorative Men of League socks to wear at their games on the weekend, with a percentage of every pair sold going directly to Men of League. The socks are now available for purchase through the Foundation's website

Rugby league is about more than what happens over 80-minutes on the field. It‟s about mateship, being a team and passing a love of rugby league from one generation to the next.

Men of League are committed to rallying around the rugby league community, helping men women and children who need a hand. To do this, the Foundation relies heavily on the generosity and financial assistance of the community and on initiatives like Men of League Weekend.

Since its inception Men of League has carried out an average of 160 welfare visits a month, spending on average $2,600 on each recipient, all to offer a hand of support to those in the rugby league community who are doing it tough.

In fact, since the launch of the Foundation in 2002, Men of League has contributed more than $3 million in welfare and support – but to continue doing this Men of League need the community to "pull up their socks".

Chairman of the Men of League Foundation, Ron Coote AM, said, "Men of League Weekend was created to encourage regional and local league teams to show their support for our work, as well as raise awareness of the Foundation and its ongoing and valuable contribution to the rugby league community.

"On and off the field our great game is about supporting your mates and we hope rugby league teams will get together and support this worthwhile initiative."

To further encourage clubs to get involved, the Foundation is running an online photo competition in which the winning club will receive a private coaching clinic designed by Knights coach Wayne Bennett and delivered by icons Ben Ross and Stuart Raper.

The competition is running via the Men of League Foundation Facebook page and encourages clubs participating in Men of League Weekend to get creative by snapping a photo of their teams wearing Men of League socks with pride.

As the only charitable organisation to support the rugby league community in Australia, The Men of League Foundation assists not only ex-players but also referees, volunteers, administrators and anyone else involved with the game at any level.
