Kurt Gidley has only played hooker sparingly in the past, but the Knights skipper has vowed to bring a creative flair to his new position this season.
Speaking at training on Monday, Gidley confirmed he'll be donning the No.9 jumper this year and can't wait to rip in after two years of injury setbacks.
Asked what kind of style he'll bring to the hooker role, the 31-year-old hoped his versatility in a number of positions over the years would serve him well.
"I think hopefully coming from a bit of fullback and halves, I can be a bit creative," Gidley says.
"I’ve played plenty of hooker in the past in different rep teams and even at club level.
"I think Wayne is a bit open to that, so I’m looking forward to that.
"I told Wayne I’d rather stay at hooker when Mullo got injured, just because I’d trained there and got my head around playing there for the whole year when Bedsy was going to retire and Wayne asked me to play there.
"So I’m looking forward to playing there.
"Obviously when Mullo got injured there was a possibility that I’d move into the halves, but I think Michael Dobson has been training well in the halves and it’s looking like we’ll go that way."
Gidley says the Club are well served in the hooker position, nominating Travis Waddell, Adam Clydsdale, Chad Redman as possible back-up options.
"Adam is a young guy who has had a big pre-season," he says.
"It was really disappointing and unfortunate that in an accident at training in Tamworth before the trial, he tore his medial by Mase hitting the side of his knee.
"So he is really disappointed, but he’ll get his chance later on in the year.
"He might get his chance sooner rather than later because I don’t think it (the injury) is too bad.
"I think Travis Waddell has been training there and Chad Redman had a really good game in Tamworth against Canberra.
"So we’ve got a couple of options there."
Gidley says he is yet to talk to coach Wayne Bennett about how many minutes he'll play against the Panthers, while he confirms he'll be looking to do some goalkicking after some practice this pre-season.
While the skipper will most likely do the majority of kicking, the Club also has Michael Dobson and Tyrone Roberts as options.
"We’ll make that decision at the end of the week and as long as I’m confident," he says.
"I enjoy goalkicking, so we’ll see how I go."
Gidley's immediate focus is this Saturday's opening round clash against the Penrith Panthers at Sportingbet Stadium.
"We haven’t spoken about Penrith yet," he says.
"As the week goes on we’ll talk about key players and what signings they’ve got I suppose.
"But we are just worrying about what we’ve done well all pre-season and putting that into place."
