The importance of the Indigenous community to the success of Rugby League will be celebrated at the week-long Festival of Indigenous Rugby League. A major highlight will be when the Newcastle Knights play a trial game against the First Nations Goannas at Hunter Stadium on Saturday, February 8.
The Newcastle Knights is offering a range of corporate packages that put spectators in the ultimate position to experience the vibrant spirit of the festivals main match.
First Nations coach, Laurie Daley and Knights coach Wayne Bennett have joined forces to give the promising Indigenous players a chance to shine on the big stage.
The First Nations Goannas brings together a selection of 16 of the countrys most talented non elite Indigenous players who dazzled selectors at the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout and the QLD Murri Carnival. The team will also star four current or former Indigenous NRL players who are yet to be announced.
Taking the place of the traditional All Stars match in 2014, the trial game will mark the culmination of a week-long celebration that will also feature the NRL Indigenous Players Cultural Camp, community and school visits, a community festival and interstate representative womens and youth matches.
Wayne Bennett has not underestimated the challenge and has pledged a quality line-up for the trial that promises to create a compelling spectacle.
The once-off trial match is a not-to be-missed event and will bring together all corners of the community.
